Carr-Ellison Park
Hebburn's principal park, the former gardens of Hebburn Hall, given to the town in 1920 and home to mature trees, gardens, play areas and the war memorial.
About Carr-Ellison Park
Carr-Ellison Park is Hebburn's great green landmark, laid out in the former private gardens of Hebburn Hall, the old seat of the Ellison family who once owned the town and the coal beneath it. When the estate passed by inheritance in 1870 to Ralph Carr of Dunston Hill, he took the family name to become Carr-Ellison, and in 1920 the family gave around 25 acres to the crowded industrial town as a public park. It opened as Hebburn Park and was later renamed Carr-Ellison Park in the family's honour, a breathing space intended for the very miners and shipyard workers who had made Hebburn what it was. Today, managed by South Tyneside Council and free to enter, the park offers mature trees, formal gardens, sports facilities and a refurbished, accessible play area, and it is home to the town's war memorial, a dignified monument to the Hebburn people lost in the two world wars.
