About St Aloysius Catholic Church

St Aloysius is Hebburn's Roman Catholic parish church, a large red-brick Gothic Revival building on Prince Consort Road and an early work by the Newcastle architect Charles Walker. The present church was opened by Bishop Wilkinson in June 1888, serving the growing Catholic community drawn to the town by its shipyards and collieries, and it was reordered for its consecration in 1999. It remains an active parish in the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, holding regular Saturday-evening and Sunday-morning Mass.

As one of the town's landmark buildings, St Aloysius is a visible reminder of Hebburn's industrial-era growth and the communities that came with it. Alongside the town's other churches and the former St Andrew's, now a Buddhist meditation centre, it forms part of Hebburn's varied religious heritage and continues to serve local worshippers today.
