About Hebburn Riverside Park
Hebburn Riverside Park stretches along the south bank of the River Tyne on around 75 acres of reclaimed land where the town's shipyards once stood. Where cranes and slipways launched destroyers such as the Hawthorn Leslie-built HMS Kelly, there is now open green space, a riverside walkway and a nature trail, making it one of the best places in the town for a walk, a run or simply to watch the river. The park's most distinctive feature is a jetty, opened in 2004, that reaches out over the water and gives a wide, uninterrupted view up and down the Tyne, its railings decorated with cut-steel panels designed by local schoolchildren. Managed by South Tyneside Council and free to enter, the park is both a leisure space and a piece of living heritage, a quiet reminder of the industry that made Hebburn, set against the working river that is being drawn back into the region's marine and energy future.
