Bonfire Night in Hebburn 2026

Bonfire Night 2026 falls on Thursday 5 November, and the honest position in Hebburn is that, as we write this in late September, nothing has been announced in the town itself. That is worth saying plainly rather than padding a guide out with events that might not happen. It is also worth being precise about what it means: not announced is not the same thing as cancelled. Two Hebburn clubs have put on displays in recent years and either could still announce something during October.

Below is what we know, what we do not, and the one option nearby that is already confirmed and free.

The town's own bonfire has lapsed

Hebburn's community bonfire at Carr-Ellison Park was a fixture for years, but the last edition we can evidence was on Monday 4 November 2019. Nothing has appeared in the park's event listings since, and it seems to have quietly stopped rather than being formally cancelled. There are claims online about why it ended that we have not been able to verify, so we will not repeat them.

That leaves the two clubs.

Two Hebburn clubs worth watching in October

Hebburn Sports Club on South Drive, the Sportsy, has run a ticketed bonfire and fireworks night on the sports ground in recent autumns. In 2025 it was held on Sunday 2 November with advance booking required. Ticket prices have varied a good deal from year to year, so we are not going to quote one.

Jarrovians RUFC at the Luke's Lane playing fields has run a free family fireworks night, with a funfair from the late afternoon and two low-noise displays during the evening, evidenced in both 2022 and 2025.

Neither club had announced anything for 2026 at the time of writing, and neither is confirmed. Both announce through their own Facebook pages rather than through the council, and announcements have landed in mid-October in past years, so those pages are the places to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.

Best for: If you only check two things this October, make them the Hebburn Sports Club and Jarrovians RUFC Facebook pages.

The confirmed option: South Shields seafront, Sunday 1 November

The borough's own Bonfire Night event is the South Tyneside fireworks on South Shields seafront, and for 2026 it is reported for Sunday 1 November with two separate displays, one at 6pm and a second at 8pm. It is free, there are no tickets and no booking, and the fireworks are fired from behind the skate park on Sea Road next to Ocean Beach.

One caveat. Those 2026 details come from a single Shields Gazette report in September, and South Tyneside Council had not yet published its own page for the event when we wrote this. The date and the two-display format look solid, but it is worth a quick check on the council website before you travel.

From Hebburn it could hardly be simpler. The Metro Yellow Line runs east from Hebburn through Jarrow to South Shields with no change, and the seafront is a walk from the terminus at the far end. Trains back afterwards will be busy, and so will the seafront itself: crowds spread along the Lawe Top, South Marine Park, The Leas and the Littlehaven and Sandhaven promenades, which is worth knowing if you would rather watch from a quieter spot than the main beach.

If you want Bonfire Night itself

Most displays across the North East this year move to the nearest weekend, so if you specifically want fireworks on 5 November the choice narrows. The closest option is the Blue Flames display at Benton on Thursday 5 November, with gates at 5.30pm and the display at 7.30pm. Tickets are sold online only, with no sales on the gate, so book before you set off. Benton Metro is on the same Yellow Line, five minutes from the ground, though it is a long way round from Hebburn compared with the hop to South Shields.

A few practical notes

Organised displays almost always ban sparklers and personal fireworks, so leave them at home rather than have them taken off you at the gate. Dogs are better left at home too, ideally somewhere indoors with the curtains drawn and the radio on. If you have young children, or anyone in the family finds loud bangs difficult, the 6pm display at South Shields is the gentler of the two, and Jarrovians' low-noise fireworks would be an excellent option locally if the club does run it again.

Wrap up warmly. Early November on the Tyne is colder than it looks from the window.
