About Hebburn Hall

Hebburn Hall, also known as Ellison Hall, is the historic country mansion that was for generations the seat of the Ellison family, the Newcastle merchant adventurers who held the Hebburn estate and drew the royalties from the coal beneath the town. A house has stood on the site since at least the 17th century, replacing an earlier tower house, and the mansion was rebuilt in grander, three-storey style in 1790 by the architect William Newton, with later improvements around 1819 by the celebrated Tyneside architect John Dobson. The Hall's story runs alongside the town's: it was here that Sir Humphry Davy is said to have stayed while carrying out safety-lamp experiments using gas from the Hebburn pit. Converted to residential apartments and houses in 1999, the Hall is now private and is not open to the public, so it should only be viewed with respect from the surrounding public paths, but it remains a tangible link to the landed family whose land and coal made Hebburn's industrial rise possible.
