Find a Tutor in Hebburn

Kumon at Hebburn Central, Kip McGrath at St Joseph's, music tuition through school, swimming lessons and freelance tutors: a practical guide to finding the right tutor in Hebburn and checking them first.

Hebburn.live·

Whether your child is wobbling on times tables, heading into GCSE year, or just wants to learn something new, Hebburn has more tuition on the doorstep than you might expect. Two of the big national maths and English programmes run centres right in the town, the comprehensive offers instrumental lessons to its own pupils, and the town's pools are busy with swimming teachers every weekend. This guide covers the main options, plus what to check before you hand over your first fee.

Start with our Tutors page

Our Tutors page gathers local tutors and tuition providers in one place, across academic subjects, music, arts, sport and languages. It is a good first stop, and it also lets you widen the search to nearby South Shields and Jarrow if you want more choice within a short drive.

Academic tuition centres

Kumon Hebburn

Kumon Hebburn runs from the first floor of Hebburn Central on Glen Street, so it is easy to combine with a trip to the library or the pool. The centre is run by Instructor Trupti Jatania and covers maths and English using the Kumon Method: short, carefully graded worksheets that children work through at their own pace, building speed and confidence through daily practice.

Students attend the centre during set study hours (currently Wednesday afternoons, Thursday early evenings and Saturday mornings) and complete worksheets at home on the other days. An average visit takes around 30 minutes per subject. Kumon Connect, the digital version of the worksheets, is also available, and lessons can be taken online. Fees are charged monthly per subject plus a one-off registration fee, so check the centre's page for current prices.

Best for: steady, self-paced daily practice in maths and English.

Kip McGrath Hebburn

Kip McGrath Hebburn is based at St Joseph's Catholic Academy on Mill Lane, NE31 2ET, and offers English and maths tuition with GCSE and A Level support. Teaching is delivered by qualified teachers, including staff experienced in special educational needs and neurodiversity, in small sessions of up to four students where each child works on their own programme.

Every child starts with a free, no-obligation assessment covering reading, comprehension, spelling and maths, which leads to an individual learning plan. The Hebburn centre is part of a small local group alongside Gateshead East, Washington and Chester-le-Street, and students can switch between centres or take lessons online if that suits the family timetable better.

Best for: teacher-led catch-up and exam preparation, starting with a free assessment.

Music lessons

For school-age musicians, the first place to ask is often the school itself. Hebburn Comprehensive School sets out in its music development plan that one-to-one and small-group tuition is available to pupils outside lesson time, across instruments including guitar, bass, piano, drum kit, violin, cello, ukulele and vocals. Ask the school's music department about current availability and charges.

South Tyneside Council's music service, part of the North East Music Hub, also teaches in schools across the borough. It offers small-group lessons on brass, woodwind and string instruments, with some guitar, keyboard and piano, plus whole-class music in some schools. Not every school has every option, so your child's school office is the place to find out what runs there.

For private piano, guitar or singing lessons, we have not found a dedicated music school based in Hebburn itself, so most families look for a freelance teacher (see below) or travel to South Shields or Newcastle.

Best for: ask at school first: in-school lessons are often the easiest and most affordable start.

Swimming lessons

Swimming is the one skill almost every Hebburn parent ends up paying a teacher for, and the town is well served. Hebburn Central runs the national Learn to Swim programme in its warm learner pool, with lessons for children and adults. At the pool at Keelmans Way School on Campbell Park Road, Puddle Ducks runs weekend baby and pre-school classes plus a Swim Academy for four to ten-year-olds, and Water Babies also holds baby and toddler classes there. Our guide to swimming in Hebburn has the full picture.

Best for: from first splashes to confident lengths, without leaving town.

Freelance and online tutors

If you want one-to-one help at home, or a subject the centres do not cover such as science, a modern language or A Level maths, national tutor platforms list plenty of private tutors who cover Hebburn, either in person or online. Rates vary widely by subject and level, and the most experienced subject specialists charge noticeably more. Online lessons widen your choice considerably, which is especially useful for niche subjects or exam boards.

Platforms vary in how much checking they do, so treat a listing as a starting point rather than a guarantee.

Best for: Always ask a freelance tutor for a current enhanced DBS certificate before the first lesson.

How to choose a tutor

  • Safeguarding. Anyone teaching your child one-to-one should hold an enhanced DBS check. Established centres handle this as standard; with freelancers, ask to see the certificate.
  • Qualifications and experience. Look for a degree or teaching qualification in the subject, and experience with your child's key stage and exam board. Membership of The Tutors' Association is a useful extra sign of professionalism.
  • A trial or assessment. Both Hebburn centres start with an assessment, and many freelance tutors offer a short first session. Use it to see whether your child gets on with the tutor's style.
  • Clear terms. Agree fees, payment dates and the cancellation policy before you start, and ask how progress will be reported back to you.
  • Talk to the school. Your child's teacher can tell you where the real gaps are, so the tutoring targets the right things.
