Swimming in Hebburn: Pools and Lessons
Where to swim in Hebburn, from public sessions and lane swimming at Hebburn Central to Learn to Swim classes for children and adults and baby swim lessons.
Whether you are teaching a toddler to feel confident in the water, keeping up a weekly length count, or easing stiff joints in a warm-water class, Hebburn has more swimming on the doorstep than many towns its size. The heart of it all is Hebburn Central on Glen Street, home to two council pools, but there is also a lively baby and toddler swim scene running at a local school pool. This guide rounds up where to swim in Hebburn, what public sessions and lessons are on offer, and who runs classes for the very youngest swimmers.
Hebburn Central: the town's pools
Hebburn Central is the obvious starting point for anyone looking to swim in the town. The award-winning building on Glen Street, NE31 1AB, opened in 2016 and brought the pools, gym and library together under one roof, and it has been the focal point of civic life ever since. There are two pools here: a larger main pool used for lane and general swimming, and a separate learner pool that is shallower and warmer, which suits young children, beginners and gentler classes.
Public swimming sessions run across the week, with the main pool used for lane swimming and general public sessions and the learner pool given over largely to lessons and family time. Timetables do shift with school holidays and term times, so it is always worth checking the current main pool and learner pool timetables on the South Tyneside Council website, or ringing the centre on 0191 424 7801, before you set out.
Best for: Best for a proper swim close to home, with two pools under one roof.
Learn to Swim for children and adults
Hebburn Central runs the national Learn to Swim programme, the same structured framework used by pools across the country, taking children from their first splashes through to confident, competent swimming. Lessons for children and pre-school swimmers are timetabled largely in the learner pool, with sessions spread across weekday afternoons and mornings, and the warmer, shallower water makes it a reassuring place for nervous starters.
Adults are not left out. The centre offers adult swimming lessons for over-18s, which is ideal if you never learned as a child or simply want to build confidence and technique. Adult lessons are priced at £7.60 for non-members, dropping to £5.85 with a Get Active Discount Card, and there is also aquatics-based fitness on the timetable. Booking is handled through the centre, so contact Hebburn Central directly for current class times and availability.
Best for: Best for structured lessons at every age, from pre-school to adult.
Baby and toddler swim lessons
For the very youngest swimmers, two well-established national providers run classes in Hebburn at the pool at Keelmans Way School on Campbell Park Road, NE31 1QY, which has free on-site parking. Both take babies from birth and follow a gentle, parent-in-the-water approach that builds water confidence long before a child is ready for the council's Learn to Swim classes.
Puddle Ducks runs baby and pre-school classes for children from birth to four years, then a Swim Academy programme for four to ten-year-olds taught with a small teacher-to-child ratio. Aquanatal classes for expectant parents also run at Keelmans Way, making it a venue families can stay with as their needs change.
Water Babies offers a similar birth-upwards programme at the same Keelmans Way pool, with classes structured around a child's developing confidence and a strong emphasis on water safety. If you are choosing between the two, it is worth contacting each provider directly, as class days, times and available levels vary through the term.
Best for: Best for building water confidence from the very first months.
Aqua fitness and gentler swimming
Not all swimming is about lengths. Hebburn Central includes aquatics fitness on its programme, the sort of water-based exercise class that is easy on joints and popular with older swimmers and anyone recovering from injury. The warmer learner pool is often used for gentler and family sessions, so if a busy lane session is not what you are after, ask at the centre about quieter times and any dedicated fitness classes.
If you are new to swimming in Hebburn, the simplest plan is to start at Hebburn Central: check the current timetables, decide whether you want public sessions, lessons or a fitness class, and go from there. For the youngest members of the family, the Keelmans Way classes are the natural first step before they graduate to the council's Learn to Swim programme.
