Learning to Drive in Hebburn
A practical guide to learning to drive in Hebburn: your provisional licence, where to sit the theory and practical tests now the Jarrow centre has closed, local driving schools, official fees and Pass Plus.
Hebburn is well connected by Metro, but a driving licence opens up the rest of the North East: the coast at Marsden, a job on the Follingsby or Monkton business parks, or a run over to family in Gateshead without checking a timetable. Learning here also gives you a useful mix of roads, from quiet estates around Campbell Park to the dual carriageways and busy roundabouts that link Hebburn to Jarrow, Felling and the A19. This guide covers the steps in order, the test centres Hebburn learners use now, the local schools worth calling and what the official fees are.
Step one: your provisional licence
Before your first lesson you need a provisional driving licence. You can apply from 15 years and 9 months old through the official GOV.UK provisional licence service, and most people can start driving a car on the road at 17. It costs £34 online or £43 by post, and an online application should arrive within a week, although it can take longer if the DVLA needs to make extra checks.
Best for: Only apply and book through GOV.UK. Third-party websites charge extra for exactly the same service.
The theory test
You must pass the theory test before you can book a practical test. It combines multiple-choice questions with a hazard-perception section of video clips, and the car theory test costs £23.
There is no theory test centre in Hebburn. The easiest option for most people is the Newcastle centre, in Suite B on the fourth floor of Tyne House on The Side (NE1 3JA), near the Quayside. It has no parking of its own, but it is a short walk from Central Station, which the Yellow Line reaches directly from Hebburn Metro. The other nearby centre is in Sunderland, in the Echo 24 building on West Wear Street (SR1 1XD). Always double-check the address on your booking confirmation.
Where Hebburn learners take the practical test
This is where older advice can trip you up. The South Shields driving test centre on the Bede Industrial Estate in Jarrow, the obvious local choice for decades, closed in 2022. Local instructors and South Tyneside councillors have campaigned for it to reopen, but there has been no announcement, so for now Hebburn learners book one of two centres:
- Gateshead, on Waterside Drive, Dunston (NE11 9HU), reached along the A184 and A1.
- Sunderland, on River Bank Road on the North Hylton Road Industrial Estate (SR5 3JJ), reached via the A19.
Waiting times vary, and both centres have been busy since the Jarrow closure, so it is worth checking both when you book. Your instructor will spend later lessons on the roads around whichever centre you choose. The practical test costs £62 on a weekday or £75 in the evenings, at weekends and on bank holidays.
Best for: Pick your test centre early and tell your instructor, so your final lessons are spent on the roads you will actually be tested on.
Local driving schools
A patient, well-organised instructor makes more difference than anything else. Ring two or three, ask whether they teach manual, automatic or both, how they handle block bookings, and which test centre they prepare pupils for.
Amber School of Motoring
Amber School of Motoring calls itself the number one choice for driving instruction in Hebburn and Jarrow, and has been teaching for more than two decades. It runs a fleet of both manual and automatic cars, offers one-to-one tuition with a female instructor available on request, and covers the rest of South Tyneside and as far as Gateshead, Low Fell and Sunderland. There is a manual beginner block booking for first-time learners, and gift vouchers in blocks of hours.
Best for: Best for: a long-standing Hebburn school with both manual and automatic cars.
Haswell Driving School
Haswell Driving School has been teaching across South Tyneside since 1987 and lists Hebburn (NE31) among its pickup areas, alongside Jarrow, South Shields and the Boldons. Lessons can start from home, work, school or the Metro. After you pass, the school also runs a Pass Plus motorway driving course.
Best for: Best for: an experienced South Tyneside instructor who also offers Pass Plus.
driveJohnson's Hebburn
driveJohnson's Hebburn is the local branch of a national school that has been teaching since 2005. It assigns each learner a dedicated instructor rather than outsourcing lessons, its Hebburn instructors are vetted and DBS-checked, and you can ask for manual or automatic when you enquire.
Best for: Best for: learners who want the structure and booking system of a larger school.
Manual or automatic?
A manual licence lets you drive both types of car, which is why it remains the default. Automatic lessons often cost a little more per hour, but many learners pass in fewer of them, and with electric cars all automatic, an automatic-only licence is far less limiting than it used to be. Choose the one that matches the car you expect to drive.
Intensive courses: a word of caution
Intensive courses squeeze the learning into a week or two, often with a test booked at the end. They can suit someone who already has experience, but they ask a lot in a short time, and with test slots at Gateshead and Sunderland in demand, a course is only as good as the test date attached to it. Check exactly what is guaranteed before paying in full. For most first-time learners, weekly lessons with extra hours near the test remain the steadier route.
Practising between lessons
Private practice makes your paid lessons go further. Your supervising driver must be at least 21 and have held a full licence for three years, and the car needs learner insurance and L plates. Start on the quieter residential streets around Campbell Park and Hebburn New Town before moving on to Victoria Road West, Campbell Park Road and the busier routes out towards Jarrow and Felling. Our guide to getting around Hebburn without a car covers the Metro routes you can use in the meantime.
After you pass
Pass Plus is a course of at least six hours with a registered instructor, covering situations such as motorway and night driving. It is most useful in the first year after passing, and some insurers offer a discount for completing it. Once you are on the road, our guide to where to park in Hebburn is a good next stop.
