Getting Around Hebburn Without a Car

One of the quiet advantages of living in Hebburn is that you do not really need a car. The town is compact, most day-to-day things are within walking distance, and the Metro puts Newcastle, Gateshead, South Shields and the coast within easy reach. The Metro

The Tyne and Wear Metro is the backbone of getting around here. Hebburn station is on the Yellow Line, so you can travel directly to Gateshead and Newcastle city centre in one direction and to Jarrow and South Shields in the other, then carry on around the loop to the coast at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. Trains run frequently throughout the day, and there is park-and-ride at the station if you want to combine the car with the Metro for a longer trip. Local buses

For journeys the Metro does not cover, local buses run from Glen Street and Station Road in the town centre, with services linking Hebburn to Jarrow, South Shields, Gateshead and Newcastle as well as the surrounding estates. Buses are handy for door-to-door trips within South Tyneside and for connecting to parts of the borough off the Metro line. Timetables are best checked before you travel, as routes and frequencies change.

Walking

Hebburn is a walkable town. The shops, the Mountbatten precinct, Hebburn Central and the Metro station are all clustered together in a compact centre, so most errands can be done on foot without much thought. Cycling

Cycling is a practical option too, helped by Hebburn's position on the riverside. The Keelman's Way, a largely traffic-free route along the south bank of the Tyne, runs through the area and links Hebburn with Gateshead in one direction and Jarrow and South Shields in the other, making for an easy off-road ride or commute. Onward to the coast and the ferry

Because everything connects, car-free days out are easy. Take the Metro to South Shields and you can pick up the Shields Ferry across the mouth of the Tyne to North Shields, or stay on the Yellow Line round to the coast for the beaches at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay.
